HI Jerry, it's Jim. KA1EUI. I miss HF packet, and also AMTOR and Gtor. They were fun and more importantly they worked! Gtor was once a rival of Clover! Then Pactor came along and everyone seemed to just stop using the other "TOR's" . They simply said "no one is on anymore and it became a self-fullfilling prophesy!
I scan around and I hear Pactor doing its Winlink thing, I hear a ton of PSK31 and a little Olivia. That's it.
PSK31 is OK, but there is no store and forward. That was the beauty of the other modes. I remember accessing BBS's on HF with Amtor and linking over to VHF packet. It used to work great.
About 1 year ago I setup a VHF packet station. There is a local BBS so I would check in every day. I tried to start conversations with other hams, I also left "bulletins" that always ended in a question to try to get some conversation going.
Well, a few did respond but it never seemed to go anywhere.
Are you doing any HF digital?

I'm thinking about standing up a BBS and would like to use HF to link into a neighboring state and to other states.
Are these the frequencies?
14.098 LSB
10.147 LSB
7.1005 LSB
Who do I need to talk to about getting access to one or more of these nets? Is there a listing of who is still on these nets?

Hello, Eric!
The twenty and thirty meter frequencies you have listed are good. I do not operate on 40m, so I can't verify that one.
I'll be glad to help you get set up on one of the HF nets. Do you already have your software and hardware ready to go?

Well, I'm working on a project.
The Virginia area has a great packet network (vden.org) but it doesn't extend past the state lines unless you go out via 40m HF. I'd like to rebuild the network that used to be in eastern North Carolina so I'm trying to find an easy way to make that happen. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to run a BBS that will be robust enough for emergency use. I'm in the process of obtaining permission for tower space for nodes. If I can find a "cheap" HF radio to use for packet I'd like to put something up on one of the other bands to provide another path in and out of Virginia and provide a path into NC. Even if I'm able to link from VA to NC I'd still like to back it up on HF as well.

So here is my plan...
I want to put together a small computer running Linux and use it as the BBS. I have a KAM+ for HF and I'd like to match it with a 9600 baud TNC for the LAN. Any recommendations on the HF radio?

I've had good luck with the old Kenwood TS-450SAT's, but any good Hf rig in decent condition should do.

Hello Guys! I am looking to get into HF packet, I have so far been unsucessful finding BBS software to run on W98SE. I use windows xp and Ubuntu 9.04. the linux version is installed on the OS but I havent a clue to configure it. I have connected with Mixw in the pass and found it very easy to use. The french site with Fbbs software isnt downloading, like a dead server or broken link. thanks steve kd5mkv

Howdy, Steve!
I run my BBS on Win98se, and found the software at the BPQ32
Yahoo!
group.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BPQ32/
What I am running is the new BPQMailChat software along with BPQ32. There is also a BPQMailChat
Yahoo!
group at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BPQMailChat/
If you subscribe to these two
Yahoo!
groups, you should be in good shape to find the software you need, and also help with questions about the software.

I have been busy working on Jnos2 from linux. Had some help and plan getting on the 14.105 net. The only problem these days with windows 98 is finding drivers to support very simple applications. Although the learning curve on Linux is very steep for me, the Linux community is very helpful especially the hams! Now my next
hurdle is getting my mfj-1278 linked up to other hams. I will research your yahoo group post and thanks for the info! Steve kd5mkv
